EPISODE ELEVEN: Coaching as a Leadership Superpower:
Pam Ellerson on Empowering Others
QUESTION: Why do you believe coaching is the one most important tools leaders can use with their team?
“Great leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about creating space for others to discover their own.”
For Pam Ellerson, coaching isn’t just a helpful tool—it’s the most important leadership tool. With over 35 years of experience leading high-performing sales teams, Pam has seen firsthand how transformational it is when leaders empower their people to think for themselves, craft their own solutions, and truly own their growth.
“When people are given the space to tap into their God-given potential, that’s when the magic happens,” she shares. “They realize the answers are already inside them—and that confidence is what drives real progress.”
question: What if my team member doesn’t see value in being asked questions?
“Great leaders don’t just give answers—they ask the questions that lead to real growth.”
Stepping into a coaching mindset can feel unfamiliar for many leaders—especially when you’re used to solving problems and offering advice. But as Pam Ellerson shares, that discomfort is completely normal.
“We’ve been conditioned from a young age to give advice—so it makes sense that as leaders, we default to providing solutions,” Pam explains. “But the real magic happens when we shift that mindset and give our team members the space to explore their own answers. Think about how empowering that moment can be—for them, and for you.”
QUESTION: What is the most important principle that you operate by as a coach?
“Coaching isn’t about leading from the front—it’s about walking side by side.”
For Pam Ellerson, the most powerful coaching principle is simple yet profound: be fully present.
“When you show up with genuine care, empathy, and presence—when you’re truly side by side with your coachee—that’s when the magic happens,” Pam shares. “It’s in that space that people feel safe, seen, and supported enough to find their own solutions.”
question: What is your practice for continue self-development in the area of coaching?
“Great coaches never stop learning—because growth is a lifelong practice.”
Pam Ellerson, PCC-certified coach and seasoned sales leader, knows that even the most experienced coaches need to keep sharpening their skills.
When asked how she continues to elevate her coaching practice, Pam shared two powerful sources:
– Peer-to-peer learning through alumni gatherings with the Leader Coach Intensive (LCI)
– Supportive organizational culture at Boehringer-Ingelheim, where regular coaching sessions and dialogue help leaders stay connected and continuously improve
“There’s nothing better than learning from your peers,” Pam says. “It’s in those spaces—where we share challenges, ideas, and insights—that we grow the most.”
LCI QUESTION OF THE WEEK
aug 11th: What question should I ask you?
This is a powerful question if you are ever coaching someone and are unsure what to ask next. We want what is best for someone, but sometimes we don’t know where to go next. This question has the dual effect of holding someone as resourceful and helping them tap into what would be most beneficial in the situation.
AUG 18TH: How are you, really?
People use the question “how are you” in a transactional way. Asking, “how are you, really?” allows someone to express what is going on for them, what is on their mind, and to feel really seen and heard. This approach is such a simple but effective way to build trust.
AUG 25TH: What needs to be explored here?
A great question to use when you see something deeper coming up or when the person notices patterns of thinking or limiting beliefs. This question helps them understand what is holding them back. It also clears the way to figuring out the next steps.
sept 1: What are you committing to?
After someone is clear on what they are trying to achieve and has some ideas of how to get there, the next step is putting it into action. The question, “what are you committing to?” is a perfect way to build accountability and support people to move forward in a positive way. It also paves the way for a follow- up to see how they did.
